In 2023 Highland Harmony reached the ripe old age of 25. During these years Highland Harmony has enjoyed chorus’s numbering nearly 30. Due to Covid and mature members retiring, our numbers are a little lower – but growing.
What can you expect? Highland Harmony provides all the resources you’ll need. The musical director is pivotal to our success and growth. Their responsibly is to provide tuition and guidance in learning the art of Barbershop - 4 part harmony. The club provides learning tracks (mp3’s) via our website. This means you can learn at home. From time to time there will be ‘sectional practices’. This is when one or more of the sections (bass, baritone, leads or tenors) will organise their own practice. These are very helpful if your section is struggling to perfect a particular song. Occasionally, one or more sections will rehearse with other sections.
The best bit is that you don’t have to read music. Most of our members have a basic understanding when it comes to reading music. If you can sing a melody or harmonise in tune, that’s good enough for us. You’ll be surrounded by passionate people who just love to sing, particularly Barbershop.
Within the first 3 months you’ll be asked to do an audition. This sounds way worse than it is. You’ll sing one song as part of a quartet. The song is Heart of my Hearts. Your audition will be one of the 4 parts. The other 3 parts will sing with you which makes it way easier.
For example – if you sing lead then you’ll be accompanied by a bass, baritone and tenor. It is performed in a separate room without an audience other than the Musical Director. Too easy. Once you have passed the audition you’ll be invited to join as a full time member.
Membership is available to any suitably qualified people of good character and reputation. No surprises there.
Subscriptions are due from the date of the successful audition. The fees for adults is $150 a year and $60 for juniors – under 25. A large chunk of the subscription goes to Barbershop New Zealand for their learning resources, workshops, competitions and conferences.
Highland Harmony has a uniform. Black shoes, black trousers, a blue shirt and a yellow/gold tie – the shirt and tie are supplied by Highland Harmony. This is usually only worn when we sing in National competitions.
We perform at numerous public events including Rest Homes, Long Term Care Facilities, Christmas events - e.g. The Otago museum and shopping malls, charity/fundraising events. We also sing at various locations around Otago. There is a strong expectation that Highland Harmony perform publicly without music. Yep – your memory will be put to the test.
Being an affiliate of the BHNZ we are invited to participate in various competitions around New Zealand and, if you’re good enough, around the world – dream big.
Come along to one of our Monday night sessions and join in the fun.
