Who is Highland Harmony?
Highland Harmony started in Dunedin in 1998. We are affiliated to the Barbershop Harmony New Zealand (BHNZ) which is affiliated with the USA-based international Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS). These affiliations bring amazing benefits and resources to Highland Harmony. Until mid-2024, we were Dunedin's only traditional male Barbershop Chorus, but now we are open to all genders.
Barbershop vocal harmony is a style of a cappella close harmony, characterized by consonant four-part chords for every melody note in a primarily homorhythmic texture.
There are 4 singing parts in a traditional Barbershop Chorus: basses (big low voices, foundation), baritones (mid-range vocals), leads (melody), and tenors (high notes). We meet every Monday night (except on Public Holidays).

You are more than welcome to join us at our rehearsals. There is no requirement to read music, although having a good ear for music is useful. It's not as hard as you may think.
Our regular weekly rehearsals are every Monday evening, from 7:15 pm to 9:30 pm at St Patrick's Community Hall, 32 Macandrew Road, Dunedin.
